Biography

Amos was born on Deer Isle in 1822, the son of Thomas Saunders Dow (1779-1866) and Elizabeth Haskell (1783-1866).[1]He is presumably named for Amos Angell, a 17-year-old from Deer Isle who drowned when the schooner Shakespeare went down in 1818.

Amos married Eunice Caroline Snowman on Deer Isle in 1845. In 1850, they lived on Deer Isle with their 2 children. Amos was a sailor.[2]In 1860, they lived in the town of Deer Isle with their six children. Amos was a mariner.[3]In 1870, they lived on Deer Isle with 8 children. Amos was employed as a caulker.[4]In 1880, Amos and his family lived in Deer Isle. Amos was a brick mason.[5]Eunice died in 1881.

In 1883, Amos married Anna Maria Sellers on Deer Isle. in 1900, they lived in the town of Deer Isle with their son, Amos. Amos was employed as a brick mason.[6]

On June 21, 1901, the Deer Isle Messenger reported "Another of Deer Isle's smart old men is Mr. Amos Dow, who was feeling quite young and spry when we met him the other day over having topped out a chimney in four hours. Mr. Dow's age is 77 years,, but we imagine few in this section 17 years younger would care to wrestle with him."

Amos died on Deer Isle in 1906.[7]

Death notice in the Ellsworth American, 30 May 1906, p.6
