Born: 27 Jan 1902 Hillkirk Street, Ardwick, Lancashire, England. [1]
Census: 2 APR 1911 York Street, Levenshulme, Lancashire, England Mary Dowd Head Single Yorkshire Leeds Frederick Dowd Son 10 School Hampshire Isle of Wight Constance Dowd Daughter 9 School Lancashire Manchester Elsie Dowd Daughter 4 Home Lancashire Manchester [2]
Parentage: 4 NOV 1918 Manchester, Lancashire, England All three children of Mary Dowd had no father listed on their birth certificates. Both Constance and her brother Fred (or Frad) listed a Fred Dowd, commercial traveller (deceased) on their marriage certificates. This was plainly not true. However there was a family story told by Constance that her father had died in the 'flu epidemic of 1918 at the family home in Longsight, Manchester. She said that his family came to claim the body and that her mother and the children were not allowed to attend the funeral. It took a long time to figure out this puzzle since we didn't know the surname of the children's father but eventually obtained a death certificate for Frederick Binns who died at Mary Dowd's home in 1918. And Frederick Binns was present with 4 month old Frad on the 1901 census. Further we have Y-DNA evidence of male line descent from the Binns family and more recently connections to the wider Binns family using autosomal DNA testing.[3]
