In the United States Census for the Year 1870, John is shown living with his widowed mother, Nicey Moore Dowden, along with his younger siblings, Frank and Fannie. His older half siblings, Edward Pinkney and Ervin, are also living in this household. John's father, Tom Dowden, has disappeared from the historical record by 1870. His mother has settled immediaely next to her father, Petty Green Moore.
1880 - 1889
By the 1880 United States Census, John's older siblings, Ervin and Edward, have married and have their own households, but John, being only 18 years of age is reported as helping his grandfather, Petty Green Moore, with the necessary farm labor.

We do not have the 1890 United States Census for Polk County, but we do have the marriage certificate showing John Stephen Dowden married Leoria Elmira Johnson in the year 1893.

John Stephen Dowden passed in May 1931 according to his Texas Death Certificae in Polk County, Texas. He and his wife are both resting in Bluewater Cemetery, just a short waling distance from the old Dowden Homestead where their family was raised.
