Birth
The Wiltshire FHS Memorial Inscription Index apparently gives his birth date as 2 Sep 1771. This needs to be verified as it is 2 years before his parents were married in August 1773 so it would seem more likley that it was 2 Sep 1773. Enquiries have suggested that the gravestones of that age are no longer present and/or legible. John's middle initial is most likely to stand for Biss, his mother's maiden name, since his siblings were Ann Biss Dowding (born 1776) and James Biss Dowding born 1780. Those dates and his parents marriage in 1773 suggest he was born in 1773 or 1774 which would match his age at death. No baptism for John as a Dowding or as a Biss has yet been found.
