John Langdon-Down was a British physician best known for his description of the genetic condition now known as Down syndrome, which he originally classified in 1862. He is also noted for his work in social medicine and as a pioneer in the care of mentally disabled patients. [1]
John, son of Joseph Almond Down & Hannah Haydon, was born on 18 November 1828 and baptised on 18 January 1829 in Torpoint - Bethel Chapel - Independent, Cornwall, England.[2][3]
John, whose father was a Grocer/Apothecary worked in the family business until 18. During a storm, he had took refuge in a cottage and encountered a girl described in the language of the day as "feeble minded" that spurred him to think "Could nothing be done for her?" When 18 he then qualified as an pharmacist before then entering medical school at the London Hospital. He won numerous medals and prizes and after taking his medical degree he was appointed medical superintendent at Royal Earlswood Asylum in Surrey. He greatly reformed the institution, implementing a much more rewarding system rewarding good behaviour and prohibiting punishments. An article appeared in the medical journey "The Lancet" which made Earlswood world famous. [4][5]
John married Mary Crellin (his sister-in-law), daughter of Philip Crellin of Clapton Square, London on 10th October 1860 in Hackney, London. [6][7]
Over time, his relationship with the old Lords of Earlwood deteriorated and after they refused to give him financial support at an exhibition he resigned in 1868. He would subsequently receive a mortgage loan to establish Normansfield asylum (arranged through Norman Wilkinson of which he named it after). Where he continued his work in this location, equipped to the highest standards of the day in both comfort and hygeine. The richly varied educational concept was unique in the whole of England and was valued accordingly. [5]
John died (age 67) on 7 October 1896 at Normansfield, Teddington, Middlesex. [8][9] He was cremated and his ashes were kept in Normansfield. [5]
