Note N134The commonly accepted date for the birth of Ellen Catherine Downes is 1843 based upon her reported age of 75 on her death certificate in 1918. However, her reported age at the time of her immigration to Australia in 1856 was 18 (not 13) - suggesting that she was more probably born circa 1838. This latter date is more likely and significantly closes the age difference between Frederick and Ellen.

Note N135Arrival in Australia: Ellen Catherine Downes emigrated to Australia on the ship Almora, which left Liverpool on 2nd July, 1856. The passenger list identifies her as being 18 years old at the time although her accepted birth date would have meant that she was 13 years old. Given that she travelled unaccompanied, I am inclined to believe her reported age on the passenger list over the estimation of her birth date based upon her reported age at the time of her death.

Ellen Catherine's older sister Bridget had emigrated to Australia at the age of 24 two years previously and was waiting for her in Australia. The story of the remaining family members' emigration to Australia is recorded as an event in the life of Ellen's father Timothy Downes.
