Joseph Tilman Downey was born on January 22, 1894 at Joggins NS to John Downey and Celina Noel.
Joseph Downey married Mabel Martin on August 28, 1914 at St. John NB.[1]
At 21 years old, Joseph had dark brown hair, blue eyes, had a medium build and stood at 5 feet 9 inches tall. He had a tattoo on his right forearm.
Previously a coal miner and a member of the local militia, Joseph enlisted into the army on December 6, 1915 at Amherst NS.

Although willing to serve overseas, Joseph served three years and 4 months in Canada. He was discharged on April 21, 1919 due to tuberculosis. His mother (Celina Downey) and widow (Mabel M. Downey) received the Memorial Cross medal. His widow also received a Memorial Plaque and Scroll.[2]
Joseph Tilman Downey died of tuberculosis at the age of 27 on April 25, 1922 at Amherst NS.[3]
