Wellington Times (NSW : 1899 - 1954), Thursday 25 October 1900, page 2 Death at Maryvale. The death occurred at Maryvale on Monday night of Mr. George William Downey, aged 43, who was a farmer and had resided in that district for about 12 years. Deceased, who was a robust, finely proportioned man, only took ill last Thursday, When Dr. C. Rygate was sent for. The trouble at first was influenza, followed by pleurisy and pneumonia, from which death resulted. He leaves eleven children, the eldest of whom is about 22 years of age. His eldest daughter is Mrs. Thomas Hart, who was left a widow four months ago. Mrs. Downey, senr. survives her son and is living at Maryvale. Deceased had six brothers, two of whom are in Queensland, one at Towri, and the other three in different parts of the colony. Mr. Downey was a popular and respected man, and great sympathy is felt for his wife and family, who, we understand, have been left in poor circumstances. The interment took place in the Church of England portion of the Geurie cemetery, at 10.30 yesterday morning, the funeral arrangements being in the hands of Messrs. Shakespeare and Co., Lee-street.
