Military Service, Civil War

Asa Downing served in the 15th Alabama Infantry during the American Civil War.

He served slightly over a year when he was badly injured at the battle of Gaines Mill. The following are from his Fold 3 service record.[5]

Asa enlisted as a private in Company F, 15th Alabama Infantry on July 3, 1861, at Fort Mitchell, Alabama.

Asa suffered a severe gunshot wound to his left hand which then had to be amputated. This was during the battle of Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862.

Once he recovered, Asa was given a medical discharge on September 29, 1862. The state of Alabama Civil War database lists his discharge as July 1862, but multiple records in his Fold3 file, including the actual discharge certificate, show September 29 or October 2, 1862.
