Research Notes

Anne JACKSON In earlier versions of this tree, I had her name as Margaret based on the references given in Burkes under her husband's name, but this turned out to be inaccurate. Recent

DOWING family research has compelling evidence that the wife of Adam DOWNING was Ann JACKSON, daughter of John JACKSON -not Margaret JACKSON, daughter of Thomas JACKSON. This information can be found on the Downing family vault at St Tida’s Church, Bellaghy Co. Londonderry. Adam Downing also named his wife as Ann in his will. Adam was b. in 1666, per Mausoleum. He died on 15 Dec 1719. His wife Anne was a niece of the Jacksons of Coleriaine. Contrary to the views of published pedigrees (including Burke), he was probably the son, of George Downing, Comptroller of Customs for Lodonderry, and his wife Jane Montgomery of Gransheogh. This makes him a descendant of Geoffrey Downing and Elizabeth Wingfield. Although he is was reputedly a great hero of the siege of Londonderry, being granted lands at Bellaghy by a grateful William III, this is a fabrication put about in Victorian ballads, put about by the Orange order, of which his descendants were members. He did fight at Londonderry, but was not conspicuously brave and he inherited Bellaghy from his father and Uncle Nicholas Downing, whose will was proved in 1698.
