Biography

Michael was born about 1902. He is the son of Michael Doyle and Anne Quinlan. [1]

The Kerryman 25 June 1932 Laune Drowning Fatality The Inquest: Mr Coroner O'Sullivan MD, Killarney, held an inquest on the body of Michael Doyle, aged 29 years, who was drowned in the River Laune on Sunday... Wm Doyle, brother of deceased, deposed that on Sunday morning he and deceased bathed in the River Laune. They came in to the midday meal. He and deceased and their mother partook of the meal. Witness went away and at about 4 o'clock he was called by a man ...who told him his brother was drowned. After much difficulty he succeeded in getting deceased out of a pool of water about eight feet deep. The deceased was a fairly good swimmer but it appears that after the meal the deceased and Morty Sullivan went swimming. They used walk out almost to their depth in the water and swim with the current-they did this two or three times. The last time Sullivan did not do it but the deceased swam near and round a rock and immediately got into difficulties. Mary Scully deposed that she and the deceased's sister were on the bank and saw the deceased and Sullivan swimming. Soon she saw that deceased was in trouble when near the rock. He sank to the bottom and came up again. He had his mouth shut as if to keep out the water. He again sank; he again came up to the top, threw up his hands and said "I am done". He sank and came up no more...Mary Doyle who was with the last witness gave corroborative evidence. Mr D Moriatrty deposed that he made an examination of the deceased and found no external marks of any kind except a few simple scratches near the eye. He said death was due to asphyxiation caused by drowning probably excellerated by dilation of the heart and distress as a result of swimming immediately after a meal. A verdict in accordance with the medical testimony was returned. The coroner expressed sympathy with the mother and relatives of the deceased and issued a warning that people should not go bathing for at least an hour after partaking of food of any sort. Supt Gantly associated himself with the remarks of the Coroner.
