"I remember Aunt Eileen well (tiny little old crone), even though she lived way up north in San Francisco and we didn't see her often ;-) There are Doyle Streets in San Francisco and Menlo Park, near us. I think the family lived in San Mateo; Barney tried to find the house at one point when he visited. Aunt Frankie went to the Menlo School, too, I believe."

Letter from Eileen to Jane (Jane/Janet Doyle Salmon) - no date
Dear Jane,
I thought I had your letter on my desk, but if so, I cannot find it. The only thing I wanted you to get straight is that your Grandfather Doyle did not come from Ireland to handle the Barbour interest as, when he arrived in the United States in 1843, he was only two years old. He was from Inistioge, Kilkenny County, (born) August 17, 1841. He came with his parents, Michael and Eleanor Delaney Doyle, his grandfather, Peter Doyle, his six sisters and five two brothers. They first lived in New York and then moved to Patterson, New Jersey, where he became connected with the Barbour brothers
[1].
They sent him to California to investigate a man in San Francisco who wanted to be their agent, but whose business conduct was suspect. It was here, and in connection with his investigation, that he met your grandfather, Marshall Martin English, and who proved the would-be agent was a first class crook. In connection with your grandfather English's experiences with him he was tried in Federal Court in Ottawa, ordered out of Canada and forbidden to do business there again. Your father had an account of the court proceedings in his scrap book. I read it the last time I visited Rand Drive. The Barbour Company then asked my father to be their agent here. He set up business here under the name "Henry Doyle and Company", and your father & Uncle Bill both worked in it until, after his death, they went into other businesses. The reason I tell you this is because Dorothy was under the impression that your Grandfather Doyle was a banker - period. He was invited by the then President of the Hibernia Bank to become a director. This man was Joseph A. Donohoe and, the reason he gave, apart from their personal friendship, was that "he wanted another honest man on the Board". Your Grandfather was Vice President when he died, but his banking was just a side interest. I suggested to Dorothy she visit the cities where her grandparents were born when in Ireland. She found Inistioge (the last syllable is pronounced "taig") charming, a river running through and lovely vistas. She wrote me "I don't see why they ever left it."
She also visited Killucan in Westmeath County, where your Grandmother Doyle was born on February 2, 1845. She was the daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth Waters Coyne, and Granddaughter of Matthew and Marcella Tallant Waters. They were there during a brief stop so Dorothy had no time to go anywhere but the cemetery
I fancy the Perrams are now en route to Yugoslavia via France and Belgium provided there was no difficulty with their car. Their stay in Yugoslavia sounds glamorous and, though when Frankie last wrote they had no definite place to stay on arrival, they seemed to be sure everything will be all right on arrival.
Virginia and George will be home Monday. Their friends, Henry and Edythe Taddeucci (double "c") are going to meet them at the Oakland Airport with Mr. and Mrs. Simpson and Gretchen, Virginia's dog, for whom they Simpsons have been caring. Dick, Alice and Dorothy will go in Dick's car so they will get a warm welcome. I expect Gretchen to go out of her mind as she adores both Marchands. They had a wonderful time with the French relatives of whom there are as many as there are Doyles. One of George's aunts lives in the Chateaux County and she took them all around sight-seeing. Bill and his family are at the River, Ruth (wife of William T. Doyle) with the Roger's granddaughters, Kathy and Jan. Bill is very busy at the Bohemian Grove and all hope to stay there i.e., Sonoma County throughout July. This week at the Grove they cremate care. Next week it will be Low Jinks and the following week High Jinks.
The Bruce Petersons (Clare Moss) are planning to come here next month for a short visit. They live in Duncan outside Victoria and Bruce teaches zoology at a nearby college. From all accounts, they are in the Seventh Heavens which is as it should be.
What do you know of the Michelmores? Dorothy has telephoned many times but without success.
Write when you can, we both love letters. I must get dinner this week, alas! So must run. My love to you and Sammy and the clan.
Affectionately, Eileen
