Pierre Dragaud was born in 1667 in Moeze, Saintonge, Frances, just west of Rochefort. He migrated first to Bristol, England, no doubt to escape religious persecution, A "worker in wool," he married Elizabeth Tavaud on November 12, 1699,, in the French Church in St. Mark's Chapel in Bristol, Gloucester, England, where his brother Jean had also married, about ten weeks earlier. At some point around the turn of the century he migrated to Staten Island, in Richmond County, New York. He appears in the 1706 census for Staten Island with his wife and three children (John, Maria, and Peter). He died there, probably in early 1712, when he was about 45 years old. He left on will and his wife was granted letters of administration on 3 April 1712. At least two of his children later moved south to Virginia and died in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia.
We believe that Pierre is the brother who first came to America and that probably all of the Dragaud/Dragoo families in America since 1701 can be traced to him.
