Biography

John Dragoo was born on 7 January 1748 on Staten Island, Richmond County, New York, the fifth of ten known children and the fourth of seven sons of Pierre Dragaud and Mary Marlett.
Alternative birth year: 7 JAN 1747, Staten Island, Richmond, New York.[1][2]
John Dragoo Log House
The two room cabin is said to have started out as a one room cabin about 1760. If this is so, it must have been built by someone other than John Dragoo. The second room was built about 1825. There were no nails in the structure. The logs were cathedral style, a V-cut commonly used in West Virginia. The original puncheon floor was salvaged and reused. The original white oak logs were numbered as they were removed. (The only structural changes to the original two room cabin were the addition of a front porch, a lean-to bedroom and bath, and electricity and plumbing). A "Heritage Day" event had been initiated by the new owners, Glenn and Ruth Moore. In 1989, Ruth Moore's sister Edith Knowlton, began living in the cabin.
On 3 October 1768, when he was twenty, he married Elizabeth Straight in Frederick County, Virginia.[3][4] She bore him five known children, four sons and one daughter:
  1. Elizabeth Dragoo
  2. William Dragoo
  3. Peter Dragoo
  4. Ephraim Dragoo
  5. Jacob Dragoo.
John served in the American Revolution. He was living in Monongalia County in 1782.[5]
He appears in the Monongalia County tax lists in the 1790s, usually with one horse or mule. He is shown in the census in 1810 and in 1820 in Monongalia County. He is especially known because his first wife, Elizabeth Straight, and their son William were captured by Indians in 1786. Elizabeth was killed and their son lived for many years with the Indians. John remarried and had four daughters by his second wife.
In 1792, when he was in his mid-forties, he married Ann Prickett. She bore him four known children, all daghters:
  1. Nancy Dragoo
  2. Mary Dragoo
  3. Rebecca Dragoo
  4. Milly Dragoo.
In 1823, when he was in his mid-seventies, John died of unknown causes on Finches Run in Monongalia County, Virginia.[6][7][8]

Elizabeth was killed in 1786 along with an infant. Tales of that event have not stated the whether the infant was a boy or girl or listed a name. All three listed have 1786 birth dates with no sources. One of them is probably the infant and the others speculation.See memories for stories about John and his family. However, paragraph 4 on page 1 of the John Dragoo story states that in 1778 he went to Kentucky to look for land and had his 19 year old son Peter with him. John was age 30 in 1778 and could not have had a 19 year old son. Peter was age 1 at the time. His oldest son was only age 10. Event: Record Role: 40001:471349375:

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
