Joseph Drake died of yellow fever due to the poor living conditions and the wet season,[1] while in Fort Diego on an island near Cabo Cativa. The fort was built by Francis Drake and his crew, from wreckage from ships on the reefs. Many men died of the fever as well. [2] Soon the poor living conditions and the wet season began to claim his men through yellow fever — including his other brother, Joseph, who died of the disease right after New Year’s Day 1573.
