Biography

Major Simeon Draper was baptized 21 November 1730 at West Greenwich, Rhode Island; married Catherine Stafford (daughter of Amos Stafford) on 26 December 1751 at Coventry, Kent, Rhode Island; and died 21 March 1773 at Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. [1]

Simeon and Catherine were the parents of six children: Amos, Catherine, Phebe, Eleanor, Ruth and Joseph. [2]

"In 1754 Simeon is listed on Rhode Island's Freeman list. He went to Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania in August 1762, one of the first forty settlers. He owned property there in what is now Kingston, Luzerne County." [3]

"He was witness to a deed 18 February 1764 from Job Dawley (who came to Beekman) in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. Simeon Draper was taxed in Beekman from June 1765 through 1769 and was assessed in June 1767 at L1. He was a subscriber to lands in Wyoming, PA (CT then) 1 May 1754 in the amount of $2.00. On 24 April 1765 the Treasurer of the Susquehanna Company was ordered to grant L15.1.4 to Peter Harris of Plainfield, "in consideration of what Benjamin Coit of Prescott received from him on account of Simeon Draper." On 4 April 1771 he was named as one of the prisoners in the PA jail because of their settlement activities. Parshall Terry testified 25 April 1794 that Simeon Draper was one of about 93 men mostly from CT, who went to Wyoming in 1762 to settle the area."[4]

"He was only 42 when he died in 1773. His widow Catherine married second Major Benjamin Harvey."[5]
