Ferdinand Adolph Dreher was an American football end who played one season with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the twelfth round of the 1938 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Denver and attended Jonesboro High School in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Dreher lettered in football for the Denver Pioneers from 1936 to 1937, earning two first-team all-conference awards. He was inducted into the University of Denver Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
Ferdinand Adolph Dreher was born on February 23, 1913 in Jonesboro, Craighead County, Arkansas.[1] The son of Henry Adolph Dreher, and Julette Elmore (Monroe) Dreher. In 1920, he lived on Culler Louis Avenue[2] and in 1930 on Main Street.[3] After graduating Jonesboro High School, he attended the University of Denver in Colorado. There he played college football for the Denver Pioneers, where he earned two first-team all-conference awards. He also played basketball at the university and earned the All-Rocky Mountain Conference honorable mention and third team All-Skyline Conference accolades. In addition to these two sports, he also competed in track and field, winning the conference championships.[4]
While at college, he married Carla Louise Hines on December 29, 1937 in Denver, Denver County, Colorado.[5] After graduating college, he played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Chicago Bears.[4] In 1940, he left the NFL and lived in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. He worked as a salesman.[6] In 1950, he lived in Branson, Taney County, Missouri and farmed for a living. His wife's brother John lived in the home with him.[7]
In 1955, he began working for General Electric Company at the Hanford Works in Benton County, Washington, as a nuclear engineer.[8]
After his retirement, he moved to Sun Lakes, Maricopa County, Arizona where he died on December 28, 1996.[8][9] He had his body cremated instead of a burial, and his ashes were given to the family.[10]
