William was probably born at Greenfield Hill near Redding based upon the family church records at Greenfield HIll Church. In these church records William's mother's maiden name is listed as Nautropp and various other Nautropps are listed.
Note: William may have had two sons Ezra June 11 1761 t New Stratfield) and William (born in 1763 at Redding) who applied for a Revolutionary War pension years later. National Archives Pension file at : https://catalog.archives.gov/id/54460992 and https://catalog.archives.gov/id/54460976
On page 2 of his file the younger William is listed as employed in a Blacksmith shop with his father at Manchester Vermont and they both had been enlisted in service of the Unied States. It is hard to follow but looks like the father died and the son worked the family Blacksmith shop in service. William who resided in New Baltimore, Green, New York, had a brother Ezra of Bergen, New Jersey, who also tried to obtain a pension and tried to help William attain his. Exra's application says they shoed horses and did various smith jobs, got soldiers pay and rations. Records suggest Ezra was rejected and William died before approval despite long delays and many people trying to help. His death is listed as 1836 on his Find A grave memorial: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/86624784/william-drew
