Biography

Contemporary Drew Researcher Will Drew identifies Deborah's birth as December 8, 1788. Her mother was very young when Deborah, her first child, was born. Deborah and her family relocated to the Pulteney area of Hammondsport near the Western shore of Keuka Lake aroung 1817. [1]

Deborah Drew was born in 1788, possibly on 1 May 1788. [2] [3]

"Landmarks of Steuben County" identifies her as the daughter of Samuel Drew and granddaughter of Gilbert Drew, both revolutionary war fighters. He marriage to Abram Depew is mentioned as well as the names of some of their 12 children, the most locally prominent of which was William M. Depew. [4]

Deborah married Abraham (Abram) Depew. [3] [5]

Deborah Drew died on 19 Aug 1864 [3] (or possibly 1861). She was buried in Depew-Wixon Cemetery in the Town of Urbana, Steuben County, New York. [6] [5]

Deborah and Abraham had children: [3]

Research Note

According to Annette Campbell's reading of the stones in Depew Cemetery, [5] Abraham Depew's wife Deborah Depew died on 19 Aug 1861 at age 76y3m19d so she would have been born about 1 May 1785. Find a Grave also says 1861. [6] It seems likely the stone is disintegrating and originally said 1864. Lacking other evidence, I'm going with the family Bible listing I have at hand because it was probably written down not long after she died. It's not clear if Find a Grave's sources are any better. Further exploration of Deborah's birth order in the Drew family may resolve this problem. -Pauline Layton, 30 May 2020.

  2. Deborah's birth date is calculated (with varying degrees of accuracy) by subtracting 76y3m19d, her age at death, from her death date which is also problematic. See Research Note.
