Biography

Charles was born February 1855 [1] in Troy, Pike County, Alabama. [2]

In 1870 he was living in Barbour County in the household of Elizabeth Driggers, 19 years older than him and apparently his mother. [3]

Charles married Caroline Evans 22 March 1877 in Montgomery, Alabama. [4]

Charles and Caroline had children:

  • Samuel Hugh Driggers, born 1878, died 1930;[5]
  • Cora Ellen Driggers, born 1880, died 1948;[6]
  • Lewis Pearl Driggers, born 1884, died 1954;[7]
  • Leola Driggers, born 1888,[1] died 1947.[8]

In 1920 Charles was living with his daughter Leola (Driggers) Williams in Andalusia. Caroline had died the year before. [9] [10]

Charles died in Monroeville, Monroe, Alabama 28 May 1944, where he was visiting his son Lewis. [11] He was buried in Andalusia with Caroline. [12]

Research Notes

Family trees in other locations show a variety of men as Charles' father and it is not clear who he was.

In 1870 Charles was living next door to Samuel Driggers in Barbour County, Alabama. Samuel was of the right age to be Charles' grandfather or father. [3] Other census years show Samuel as Samuel H. Driggers. Charles' first son was Samuel Hughes Driggers, suggesting that Samuel H. Driggers could, indeed, be the grandfather or father of Charles.

The 1860 census shows a John Driggers, 19, living with Samuel, presumably Samuel's son. [13] A John Driggers married Elizabeth Davis 3 August 1853 in Pike County, Alabama. [14] She could be the Elizabeth Driggers who Charles was living with in 1870. However, if Charles' father was John Driggers, he is not the one living with Samuel Driggers in 1860, because Charles would have been five years old in 1860 and that John would have been 14 when Charles was conceived.

The most precise location for Charles' birth is Troy, Pike County, Alabama, from the death certificate of Charles' son Samuel Hugh Driggers, which fits with his parents being John Driggers and Elizabeth Davis, who married in Pike County. Pike County is the county to the west of Barbour County. [2] That John Driggers would have been born before 1832 to be at least 21 at marriage.

Elizabeth Davis was probably the one who was 15 in 1850 and living in the household of Noah Davis in Pike County. That would make her 18 at marriage. Interestingly, there also was a 58-year-old John Drigers in the same household. [15] If these are the John Driggers and Elizabeth Davis who married in 1853, she would have been 18 and he 61. That is not likely but is possible and would explain why Charles' father was not in the household in 1870.

How Charles was related to Samuel Driggers of Barbour County is not clear and no real evidence has been found to identify Charles' father.

Hi again Patricia,

WikiTree has a Driggers Name Study as part of the One Name Studies. Would you take a look at the Driggers Name Study page and consider adding the category or template codes to the first line of this profile? You can find them in the first item of the task list. There's no requirement but we'd love to include this family in the project!

Hi Patricia,

I found this marriage index record for Charles and Caroline' marriage record at FamilySearch using the Research tool:

  • "Alabama County Marriages, 1809-1950," database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKMB-GDP5 : 15 November 2020), Charles F Driggars and Caroline Ebans, 22 Mar 1877; citing Montgomery, Alabama, United States, County Probate Courts, Alabama; FHL microfilm 2,358,447.

FamilySearch hasn't digitized the images yet but you can copy that paragraph and paste it under the Sources heading in the edit box on the profile. That will give you a quick link to check occasionally to see if the image of the record has been attached yet.

I hope this helps!

Debi
