She married John P. McWhorter on December 26, 1850. [1] He died December 23, 1861 in the Post Hospital in Rolla Missouri, during the Civil War. They had five children, four of whom were living on May 9, 1864. They were: William Henry, Elijah E., Nancy J., and Levi M. [1]
On April 27, 1867 she married William J. Plank in Phelps County, Missouri.
When applying for payment of pension arrears on August 9, 1869 she listed she was 47 years of age which would make her birth year 1822. [4] so was born around 1822.
Sarah passed away on June 28, 1909 in Norman Township, Dent County, Missouri. She was laid to rest in Morrison Cemetery, [5]

William is the only family member who can read or write. William and Sarah were married in 1867. John and Benedict are the children of his previous wife.
John R Plank, M, age 15 [b. 1855], born in Missouri
Benedict B Plank, M, age 13 [b. 1858], born in Missouri
Hiram E Plank, M, age 2 [b. 1868], born in Missouri[6]
The next three children are enumerated in a separate household from William and Sarah’s. Sarah McWhorter Plank’s Civil War Widow’s Pension record shows that Nancy J. and Levi M. McWhorter are two of her children with John P.McWhorter. At age 13, Nancy seems too young to be head of a household. Was this an enumerator’s mistake, or did they live in a separate house?
Amanda McWhorter, born three years after John’s death, is not his daughter. If he had been, her name would be on the pension claims. Amanda’s death certificate says her father was Henry McWhorter. Henry appears on few of the usual databases. A Henry McWhorter did live in Phelps county in 1871, when he married Nancy Shuemate, but he is Amanda's half-brother.[7]
