René Douillard variation: Drouillard, dit Laprise

In his marriage record of 4 October 1694[1] René names his parents as Jean Drouillard and Françoise Doublet of Saint-Pierre de ‘Juy’ in Saintonge and his age is shown as 33 years old. ‘Juy’ is actually Juicq, a small community neighboring Saint-Hilaire de Villefranche where his older brother was baptized in 1653. In 1677 the parish records of Juicq show ‘René Douillard laboureur à bras’ as godfather for a child baptized there. Whether ‘Drouillard’ or ‘Douillard’ is the correct form of the surname is uncertain; René and his own son René seem to have more often used Drouillard, but later generations appear to have favored Douillard.[2]

René Drouillard lived
in Canada, Nouvelle-France.

René arrived in New France as a soldier of a marine company detachment in or before 1689, and later assumed the trade of carpenter. Several civil documents shed light on his career in the colony.[3]

René was married to Louise Forestier October 4, 1694 at Montréal.

René Douillard dit Laprise, and his wife Louise Forestier, daughter of Étienne Forestier dit Lafortune and Marguerite Lauzon were gaurdians for the minor siblings around Mar 4, 1700.[4]

On July 13, 1705 René Douillard dit Laprise, husband of Louise Forestier and guardian of the minor children of Étienne Forestier dit Lafortune and Marguerite Lauzon, held a meeting with relatives and friends to deliberate on what will be more advantageous for the preservation of the property of minors; the minutes of the meeting and the conclusion of the king’s attorney. [5]

Louise died in April 1737 and René died two months later in June.
