James Connelly was the fifth of six children of Adolphus and Sarah Jane Correll Drum. He spent his early years working on his family farm. There is no record of any formal schooling but, like all of his siblings, his father made sure he could read and write.
He married Lillie Maude Hefner in 1910. Their home was in West Hickory, Catawba County, NC.. They had seven children. Ruth was born in 1911, Bernice in 1912, Clayburn (Clabe) in 1915, Theresa Eunice in 1917, Howard Daniel in 1920, Harold Thomas in 1924 and Melba in 1927. James Connelly worked at Southern Desk Company all his adult life.
