Joan left school after completing her merit year. As she was only 14 years old and legally unable to work she spent the next year at home helping out her mother with the house chores. According to her it was very hard work. When she turned 15 she went to work at a local clothing factory first starting off as the errand girl and working her way up to working on the machines. Both her sisters Betty and Dot worked at the factory too.
At the age of 19 she married. She and Norm honeymooned in Shepparton. When they returned to Melbourne they lived in Brunswick for a while and then managed to secure a housing trust home in Reservoir at 41 Summerhill Road.
They brought up their family there and stayed there until Norm retired and then shifted to Adelaide to be near the grandchildren of Gary and Janette.
Life was difficult when they were raising their children. Norm it seemed always had 2 jobs, gardening during the day and working as a barman in various hotels at night. He also worked as a cleaner in the market at the Northland Shopping centre for some years. Joan also contributed by doing piece work (sewing) for a local merchant in her home, burning the midnight oil on many occaisons. She also had a talent for knitting and was knitting jumpers to order for a wool shop in Plenty Road, Reservoir.
