Sir James was the second son of David Drummond, Lord Drummond^[1][2] by his wife Lilias Ruthven.^[3]

On 31 Jan 1609, he was created Lord Maderetie with remainder to the heirs-male of his body..^[4]

He married Jane Chisholm, daughter of Sir James Chisholm, 3rd of Cromlix.^{[1][4] [5]} They had issue:
