When James Elmore Dry was born on July 21, 1821, in Allen, Kentucky, his father, George Dry, was 35 and his mother, Mary Polly Oliver, was 29. He married Mary A. Brown on January 18, 1846, in Monroe City, Missouri. They had five children in 17 years. James was a Civil War Private, in Company B, 4th Missouri Cavalry, CSA; and tragically died when the steamship Kentucky capsized on the Red River in Indian Territory returning home after the Civil War. James and many other soldiers died on June 9, 1865. He was 43 at the time of his death, and was buried in Madison, Missouri.
