^[1]“498. Joshua John Ryland Dryden, son of Joshua [245] and Anne Maria (Roberts) Dryden, was born on June 26, 1819, in Baltimore MD. He married on Nov. 5 (lic. Nov. 2), 1844, Cordelia Elizabeth Owings. Cordelia, daughter of Dr. Thomas Beal and Cordelia (Harris) Owings was born on July 3, 1822.

Joshua worked as a brickmaker for a few years (Ward 15, house 1338, in 1850), then went into the merchandising busienss, in time becoming a prominent dry goods merchant in Baltimore (Ward 12, house 1766, in 1860; Ward 12, 2nd sect., house 355 in 1870; Ward 12, in 1880).

During the Civil War, Joshua was an ardent Southern sympathizer and made generous donations for the welfare and comfort of the Southern troops, the last of which was traced to him. He was arrested and confined to the old Capitol Prison in Washington for five months.¹⁴⁰^[2]

Joshua's wife Cordelia died on Jan. 19, 1896, in Baltimore. Joshua died there on Feb. 1, 1903. They were buried in Greenmount Cemetery.
