Lee Frank DuBose

A pall of gloom was cast over our little city Tuesday morning when it became know that Lee Frank DuBose, one of our prominent and popular young businessmen, had answered the final summons at his home in this city, Tuesday, February 9, at 1:30 a.m. after a critical illness of some ten days.

Many were the hearts that were saddened when the seriousness of his condition was realized but loved ones and friends cling to the hope that there was yet a chance for his recovery until Monday when he begun to sink. The best medical skill, the tenderest nursing, together with an indomitable will on the part of the patient were powerless to combat the fatal disease.

A heart broken young wife and baby son, John William, a little over two years old, survive him besides his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John DuBose of this city and the following brothers and sisters; Messrs. John, Ollie, and Whit DuBose, Mrs. N. I. Cook, Mrs. Chas. G. Riske, and Miss May DuBose.

Mr. DuBose was born at Hamon and was 33 years, 4 months and 17 days of age. He comes of one of the oldest and most highly respected county families, his paternal grand father, having been one of the early settlers of this county, residing for many years in the Hamon section. He leaves a very large family connection, all representative citizens of county.

Mr. DuBose was reared in this county, and moved to town some eight years ago, since which time he had been actively associated with his father and brothers in one of our leading grocery firms, Messrs. John DuBose and Sons. He was closely identified with the commercial life of the city and his genial manner and sterling traits of character had won for him an enviable place in the estimation of all.

He was a professing Christian and a member of the Presbyterian church having united with the church ten years ago.

Called in the full strength of a ripe young manhood from the midst of life activities, from the midst of an ideally happy home, his death is the saddest to to occur here in many months.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the grief stricken wife, father, mother and other loved ones in their hour of deep bereavement. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+ One of the largest funerals that has taken place in Gonzales in a number of years was that of Tuesday afternoon when a vast concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives entered from every section of the county to pay their last respects to the memory of Lee Frank DuBose, to drop a tear upon his bier.

Simple and touching services were held at the family residence at 4:30 o’clock, by the decedents pastor, Rev. Chas. H. Dobbs of the Presbyterian Church. The handsome grey casket containing the remains of the loved Dead was banked with numerous handsome floral offerings, a sheaf of exquisite white roses and a handsome pillow of hyacinths, calla lillies and narcissus resting on the foot.

The service opened with scripture reading and prayer after which the choir sang the hymn “Asleep in Jesus.” A fervent prayer was offered by Tev. L. C. Mathis, pastor of the Methodist church, following which a heartfelt talk was made by Rev. Mr. Dobbs, A hymn, “Jesus, Lover of My Soul.” concluded the service. The acting pall bearers then bore out the casket to the waiting hearse, and the long procession formed and moved to the I.O.O.F. Cemetery where a large crowd had already gathered, in autos and other conveyances to await the arrival of the funeral cortège.

After the casket had been lowered into the White lined, cedar bordered grave, a short service was held, Tev. W. K. Penrod, pastor of the Baptist church, assisting.

Seldom has such a wealth of magnificent floral tributes been seen adorned the last resting place of this lamented young man. The choicest hot house blossoms together with the early spring violets, narcissus and ferns mingled their beauty to form an exquisite mantle of fragrant bloom that extended far out beyond the mound, eloquently attesting to the love and esteem in which Mr. DuBose was held and sympathy for the dear ones in their hour of grief.

A handsome cross in white and green stood at the head and an anchor in the same colors was placed at the foot, the mass of blossoms being fringed about with pretty potted plants.

In addition to the many beautiful offerings from friends and relatives both at home and from a distance, there were a number of very handsome special tributes from various organizations. Among them was a lovely anchor in sweet peas, narcissus and ferns from the Presbyterian Aid Society, a large basket of white hyacinths from the Presbyterian Womans Society and the Missionary society; a handsome pedestal anchor fashioned of narcissus and ferns from the Presbyterian Philathea class; a beautiful pillow of hyacinths, calla lillies, narcissus and ferns with the letters, T. A. S., across the center from the T.A.S. Club; and a exquisite dainty basket of white sweet peas and ferns from the August Kleine Sr. Rebekah lodge.

Numerous relatives from various portions of the county were in attendance at the funeral.

Messr. Walter and Gus Franks Of San Antonio, uncles of Mrs. DuBose, were also present, coming down by auto.

As we turned sadly from paying this last earthy tribute to the remains of one so recently mingling in the daily activities of life, and take up our own daily round of duties, we are forcibly reminded that “in the midst of life we are in death,” and, while this dispensation of Providence is far beyond our feeble human understanding, “Some Time We’ll Understand” Of we place our trust in Him who doeth all things well as did this young man whose passing has brought such sorrow into our midst.

The following were pallbearers: Active- J. F. Wood, Wm. Cook, W. P. Midkiff, T. G. Goss, N. D. Cone and Jones Matthews; honorary-W. B. Houston, Dr. W. J. Hildebrand, Dr. W. T. Dunning, M. J. Koch, r. S. Dilworth, R. H. Walker, Fred Kokernot, John Rainey, C. H. DeWitt, Joe S. Lewis, J. B. Dunning Sr., John Freeman, J. M. Mohrmann, O. W. Askey, George Toullerton of Houston.
