Biography

Fannie was born in 1879. Fannie Belle married Elmer Elderkin of Pinesbrook. They had a small farm there on which she did chores when he was away during the week, for he was also a logger, who had teams of horses that drew four-foot wood off the hills after woodsmen had cut down the trees and cut it up. They piled it in lumberwagons and drew it to the O&W Railroad yards, piled it in box cars and it was shipped to acid factories all along the way where the factories were located. Later, they bought the farm on Murphy Hill outside of Walton. Elmer died at the age of 42. Fannie and the children ran the farm until her oldest son, Herbert, married, then she sold to him and his wife, Iris, and bought a house on Prospect avenue in Walton. Beatrice and John moved with her. The only experience she really had was housework, so that was what she did for several years. Dr. Bush persuaded her that cleaning offices would be much easier -- men didn't expect a cleaning lady to move heavy furniture, etc. She found this to be true and had more calls to work than she could handle. She was highly respected, and the pay was much better. She worked, by choice, until her 75th birthday. On vacations, she took trips with her family to all the states, Mexico, and Canada and when she was 85 she went to Alaska with us. We were gone a month and she enjoyed every minute of it. She and my brother-in-law Millard were disappointed because -- when we put the car on the boat to come down the passage-way -- the water wasn't rougher. She had four children: Herbert, Florence, Beatrice, and John B. She passed away in 1966. [1]
