Biography

Emma (Dubbs) Garver has German Roots.
Emma (Dubbs) Garver was a Pennsylvanian.

Emma, daughter of Israel Boardt Dubbs and Elenora Ehrhart,[1] was born 26 November 1887 in Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[2]

Emma was 13 years old when she was enumerated in the 1900 census in North Codorus Township, York County, with her parents Israel B. (age 36, miller) and Elenora Dubbs (35, mother of six, all living), and siblings Frederick Calvin (15), Willis Leroy (10), Bertha Ruth (8), Elenora Esther "Nora" (5) and George Elwood (3).[2]

On 4 May 1907 in Jefferson, York County, Emma (age 19) married the 19-year-old Charles Irvin Wertz,[3] son of Jesse H. Wertz and Lovina E. Shue.[citation needed] They had three children before his death:

  • Edgar L. Wertz (b. 17 August 1907;[4][5] d. 15 April 1981).[4][5]
  • Herman A. Wertz (b. ~1912;[6] d. before 2012).
  • Miriam Elenora (Wertz) Altland (b. 19 June 1917;[7][8] m. Paul Edward Altland;[8] d. 11 November 2012).[7][8] Three sons.[9]

In 1910, Charles (age 22, house painter) and Emma (22, mother of one) rented a house in Jefferson, Codorus Township, for themselves and their son Edgar Wertz (20).[10]

Charles died at age 31 on 15 December 1919 during the Spanish flu pandemic.[11][12] Afterwards Emma moved back to her parents' farm, where in 1920 the household consisted of the widowed Emma (age 32), her three children Edgar L. (12), Herman A. (8) and Miriam Elenora (2), her parents Israel B. (age 55, farmer) and Ellen K. (53, mother of nine, all living), her siblings Annie M. (18), Charles P. (16), Henry P. (13) and the widowed Willis Leroy (29, laborer) and Willis's son (her nephew) Beecher Mitzel Dubbs (3).[6] She and her brother Willis had both lost spouses during the pandemic and were likely a comfort to one another.

On 22 July 1921 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, she remarried to Calvin Garver,[1] son of Jonas Garver and Leah Spangler.[1] They had four children:

  • George C. Garver (b. 14 January 1922;[13][14] m. Margaret M. Miller;[14]
    d. 25 September 2008).[13][14] United States Army veteran of World War II.[15] One son.[14]
  • Virginia Garver (b. 16 July 1929; d. 17 July 1929).[19]
  • Infant Daughter Garver (b. and d. 21 January 1931).[20]

Calvin (age 48, farmhand) and Emma V. Garver (42) settled in Jackson Township, York County, where they rented a home in 1930 for her children George C. (8) and Richard J. Garver (4) and Miriam E. Wertz (12).[21] Calvin (58, public road worker), Emma V. (52) and Richard C. Garver (14) remained in a rented house in Jackson Township in 1940.[22] The record shows that Calvin and Emma had each completed five years of formal education; Richard had just completed the eighth grade.[22]

Emma died 22 January 1966 and was buried next to her first husband at Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, Codorus Township.[23]
