Biography

Joseph was born about 1744. He was the son of Joseph Duckworth and Esther Ong. He lived in Moore County, North Carolina, where he received a grant of 300 acres of land on 16 March 1799.[1]

Will

Joseph wrote his Will on 22 August 1817. He left bequests of twenty shillings to the heirs of this brother Jeremiah Ducksworth and twenty shillings to the heirs of his brother Jacob Ducksworth. The rest of his estate he left to his wife Hannah for her life and "it is my desire and intent hereby that after the death of my beloved wife Hannah Ducksworth that my negroes viz Chain, Puggy, Tempy, Jerry, Daniel, Anderson and Essex be liberated and set free from servitude to any person or persons whatsoever and that they may then injoy and quietly possess all the residue of my estate and that the same be equally divided between them the said Chain, Puggy, Tempay, Jerry, Daniel, Anderson and Essex. The Will was proved in the May term of court 1818.[2]

His widow Hannah Duckworth wrote her Will 11 September 1828. She left livestock and household goods to "my servant Jerry," to Silva, to Tempa, to Hannah, and to Lucy. The rest of her property was to be sold and equally divided among "the six old ones namely Chain, Silva, Tempa, Jerry, Daniel , and Essex."[3]
