Biography

Lucy Dudley was born about 1523 in Yanwath, Westmorland, England, daughter of Thomas Dudley (~1475– ) and Grace Threlkeld (~1474–1551).

Jackson writes:

Lucy was twice married, her first husband being Albany Fetherstonhaugh (shortened to Fetherston) ; the names of their children and the probable order of their births are given in the father's Will, dated November 5th 1573, and therefore I have appended them in the pedigree, and added Albonie, a grandson, from the Lowther Register : Lucy married secondly, Gerard, brother of Sir Richard Lowther, and Gerard's house in Penrith has been described in our Transactions by Dr. Taylor, F.S.A., and myself. She was buried at Penrith, December 30th, 1596.[1]

The children he names:

  • Alexander Fetherston m Anne d. of Sir Richard Lowther. (They had a son Albonie bapt in Lowther, in 1576
  • Anne
  • Nicholas
  • Jane
  • Leonard
  • Grace
  • Christopher
  • John
  • Henry Fetherston of Kirkoswald d. 1626 m. Dorothy Wybergh d of Thomas of Clifton

That list however can be reconciled with the following information.[2]

2. Alexander Fetherstonhaugh, of Fetherston Castle (will dated 1544), marr. Anne, dau. of John Crackanthorpe, of Newbiggin, Sheriff of Cumberland 1477 and 1512. His son,
3. Albany Fetherstonhaugh, of Fetherston, marr. 1543 Lucie, dau. of Thomas Dudley, of Yanwath. His younger son,
4. Henry Fetherstonhaugh, the first of Kirkoswald (d.1626), marr. (I) Dorothy (d.1621), dau. of Thomas Wybergh, of Clifton. His son,
5. Sir Timothy Fetherstonhaugh (1601-51) marr. Bridget, dau. of Thomas Patrickson, of Caswellhow. His son,
6. Thomas Fetherstonhaugh (1628-86) marr. (I) Katherine (d. 1652), dau. of Thomas Musgrave, of Crookdake; (2) Mary (d. 1693), dau. of Henry Dacre, of Lanercost. His son,
7. Timothy Fetherstonhaugh (d. 1728, aged 7o) marr. Bridget (d. 1736, aged 73), dau. of James Bellingham, of Levens. His son,
8. Heneage Fetherstonhaugh (1693-c.1737) marr. Jane, or Joan (d. 1784), dau. of Lydston, or Lidston, of Dartmouth, Devon. The tinctures on this and most of the other shields are faded and discoloured, and if the fess was originally not Vair, as it now appears to be, but vairy Argent and Sable, then the arms are those given by Burke and Papworth for Litcott and Lydcotte. Heneage's son,
9. Timothy Fetherstonhaugh (d. s.p. 1797) marr. Dorothy (d. 1817, aged 74), dau. of Joseph Appleby Dacre, of Kirklinton Hall.

...and (the elder line)...

19. Alexander Fetherstonhaugh, of Fetherston (d. 1596), eldest son and heir of Albany Fetherstonhaugh, of Fetherston, see Note 3., marr. Anne, dau. of Sir Richard Lowther, of Lowther. His son,
20. Albany Fetherstonhaugh, of Fetherston (aged 21 and over in 1596), marr. Frances, dau. of John Barwise, of Ilekirk

Another CWAAS article which agrees that Lucy's husband was named Albany is by MRS. FETHERSTONHAUGH and F. HASWELL, M.D.[3]

Henry Fetherstonhaugh was the second son of Albany, of Fetherstonhaugh Castle, on the border between Cumberland and Northumberland ; and as his mother was Lucy Dudley of Yanwath, afterwards wife of Gerard Lowther of Penrith, he was no stranger to these parts (Dugdale's Visitation)

(That article proceeds to give a very detailed pedigree starting at Henry. It includes Heneage and Albany. The first Heneage's father is named as Timothy. No Cuthbert in sight.)

There is an article also about Gerard Lowther, which indicates that his heirs were his sisters, Catherine and Mary. So it seems he had no children with Lucy.[4]

I see that various disconnected Featherstons (various spellings) are already in Wikitree. At least one person using the unusual name Albany in the 19th century. If they can link back to here they have an Edward III descent.
