Biography

Paul Dudley was born in 1675. He was the son of Joseph Dudley. He passed away in 1751.[1] According to Wikipedia, he was born 3 September 1675, but his Find A Grave memorial shows that he was born 3 March 1675 in Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

Dudley, Massachusetts is named after Paul Dudley and William Dudley, who were its first proprietors.

  • From "Joseph Atkins: The Story of a Family":
Paul (1675-1751), having been graduated at Harvard 1690, A. M., 1693, was bred to the law, finishing at the Inner Temple, London. He returned to America in 1701 commissioned as Attorney General of the Province He was Speaker of the House, later Judge of the Superior Court of Judicature, and in 1745 raised to the Chief-Justiceship. He was a man of sterling uprightness, a judge of dignity and impartial ruling, a jurist by whom the best laws enacted in his time were often suggested. A later judge, Sewall, wrote of him, "While with pure hands and an upright heart, he administered justice in his circuit through the Province, he gained the general esteem and veneration of the people." He was a prolific writer, especially on the natural history of New England, and upon the Indians, and endowed Harvard with a lecture fund, whose use has been recently revived.
His wife, Lucy Wainwright, who lived to the age of 72, was noted for her cleverness of mind, her "heavenly temper", and her many "shining graces."

Paul passed away about 1751. According to Wikipedia, he passed away 25 January 1751. According to his memorial in Find A Grave he passed away 21 January 1751. He is buried at Elliott Burying Ground, Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. [2]

The Dudley Community and three associated Harvard residences are named for Paul Dudley’s grandfather, the Massachusetts governor and Harvard overseer Thomas Dudley.[3]

Research Note

According to Harvard University's recently published report on "Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery"[4]Paul Dudley was a Fellow from 1697-1700. He donated 133 pounds sterling in 1750 to Harvard to fund an annual lecture.

He was also a slaveholder of two people: a boy of about 14 named Cuffy/Joachim (1705) who was trafficked from Brazil by the pirate John Quelch[5][6] and a woman named Guinea/Ginney (1745).[7][8][9]
