DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I have many DNA matches to descendents of William Dudley and Jane Lutman who came to Guilford aboard the St. John in 1639. William was born in Dorking, Surrey, England which is also my hometown. Mary Dudley from Dorking was my 3rd great-grandmother. I also have a number of Dudley DNA matches that descend from this John Dudley / Martha French marriage. I suspect that John Dudley was descended from William Dudley and Jane Lutman rather than from the noble Dudley family from the Midlands in England but I haven't yet figured it out.

I suspect that these are indeed two different men, but unfortunately the "man-of-war ship" story is just family tradition. The Early New England Families Project wouldn't give me access with just a guest account, so not sure if they have any hard proof that John Dudley (son of Samuel Dudley) died relatively young in Massachusetts.

I found it particularly interesting that John Dudley of Guilford Connecticut was called "Deadly" in the early records and only changed to Dudley later.

John Dudley of Guilford seems to be a different person than John Dudley (son of Samuel Dudley and Mary Winthrop).

See the weblink below which says: "John Dudley had been pressed on board a British man-of-war ship in London. He escaped and came to Boston and then Guilford in 1673." http://www.frenchfamilyassoc.com/FFA/CHARTS/Chart009/Gen2.htm The other John Dudley (son of Samuel) apparently died at Boston or Salisbury, Massachusetts, probably in the late 1650s.

OK I have connected up all the dots. Have some things more to add to the Biography. I have added all the children except one which I can not confirm yet. But everything looks fine.

Good work. David T. Robertson [Robertson-7481.]
