Obituary

From the Jamestown Daily Journal: [1]

"Leet -- At Point Chautauqua, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 2nd, 1879, Mrs. Abigail Leet, relict of Captain Anson Leet, aged 99 years.

Mrs. Leet (Abigail Dudley) was born in Guilford, Conn., Jan. 27, 1780, being thus at the time of her death, but a few days past her 99th birthday, and probably the oldest person in the county. In 1799, at the age of 19 years, she was married to Anson Leet, also a native of Guilford. Soon after their marriage they came west, settling in Herkimer county, where they resided for about ten years. In the spring of 1811, Capt. Leet and his two brothers, with their families, came to Chautauqua County, the two brothers settling in Pennsylvania, and the Capt. in the town of Stockton. In 1817 he bought 69 acres of land on the east side of the Lake, including the present Point Chautauqua, and building a log hut, settled down for life. His death occurred in 1843. Mrs. Leet has lived in the same locality ever since, making a continuous residence at Leet's Point, or Point Chautauqua as it is now called, of 62 years. Of their ten children nine are still living, and with the exception of the youngest daughter, all are Chautauquans. Jonathan, the oldest, born in 1800, and consequently 79 years of age, resides at Westfield; Simeon at Ellery; Timothy born in 1803, died many years ago; Lewis, lives in Ellington Center; Eliza, wife of Nehemiah Herrick, lives at Dexterville; Caroline, with her husband William Vorce, is at Westfield; Maria, wife of John Mason, at Dewittville; Franklin and William both still reside at the Point, and Mary, the youngest, 59 years of age, is the wife of Henry Barnhart, of Schoolcraft, Michigan."
