At the age of 10, John appeared in the 1881 Census of England with his parents in Hillingdon, Middlesex. ^[4]

In 1901, John immigrated to Canada aboard the Virginian. At the age of 49, he immigrated from Canada to the United States in 1920. He was a butler. ^[5]
