Biography

1776 Project
John Dudley served with Civil Service, Massachusetts during the American Revolution.

John was born on 20 August 1743 in Sutton, Worcester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was the son of Jonathan Dudley and Hannah (Putnam) Dudley (1717-1801).[1]

John married Molly (Morse) Dudley (1748-) on 13 October 1768 in Sutton, Worcester, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.[2][3]

From the Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War, Vol. 5, Pg. 6: "Dudley, John. Private, Capt. Abraham Batcheller's co., Col. Jonathan Holman's regt.; service, 10 days; company marched to Providence, R.I., on an alarm in Dec., 1776. Roll sworn to in Worcester Co."[4] From the History of Sutton, 1704-1876, Pg. 773: "This regiment, being composed largely of men from Sutton, and under the command of a Sutton officer, was usually known and styled as 'The Sutton Regiment'. It was destined to be a very severe and long continued service of nearly two years, during which it was engaged in many battles with the enemy, and finally, if we accept the evidence of a high British authority, in the great decisive battle of the war, the battle of Saratoga."

John also provided Civil Service by serving on the committee to raise troops and the Committee of Correspondence for Sutton, Massachusetts.[5]

He passed away in 1786. John was mentioned on a memorial in Wilkinsonville Cemetery, Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States.[6]
