Joseph Dudley was born 23 September 1647 in Roxbury now Boston, Massachusetts.[1]He was a son of Thomas Dudley and Katherine (Deighton) Dudley.[2][3] [4]
Joseph graduated from Harvard College in 1665. He was the Overseer from 1702-1715.[5]
He was the son of one of the founders of Roxbury, Massachusetts. He was an English colonial administrator, having a leading role in the administration of the Dominion of New England (1686-1689), it was overthrown in the 1689 Boston revolt. He briefly served on the council of the Province of New York. In the 1690's he was lieutenant governor of the Isle of Wight. In 1702, he was appointed governor of the provinces of Massachusetts Bay and New Hampshire, he held posts until 1715.
Dudley, Massachusetts is named after Joseph and Rebecca's two sons Paul and William, who were its first proprietors.
Joseph married c. 1668-70 at Roxbury/Boston ,Massachusetts to Rebecca Tyng.[1]

According to Harvard University's recently published report on "Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery"[8]Governor Joseph Dudley enslaved 3 people: an unnamed "Indian girl" documented in 1679; Peter, documented in 1687; and Brill documented as owning her from 1713-1722.[9]
