Biography

Josiah was born in 1864. He passed away about 1917.

From Ancestry.com: "A Century and a Half of Pittsburg and Her People" - When Josiah first went out on his own, he became a teacher, but then he abandoned that to work in the mercantile industry. He held a position for a time in a general store in Murrysville and then went to East End, Pittsburgh, where he started a grocery business. He sold the business (making a profit) and then accepted a position with the Carnegie Brothers & Company. He stayed there five years and was connected with various iron and steel manufacturers. He then became Secretary and Treasurer for the American Spring & Manufacturing Company. He sold his interests in that company and on October 1, 1905, he created the J.J. Duer Spring Works in Pittsburgh. It became incorporated December 31, 1906, under the name Duer Spring and Manufacturing Company and was located at McKee's Rocks, Pennsylvania.
