Garden William Duff, 9th of Hatton, was born on 10th June 1814 and baptised at Turriff, Aberdeen, Scotland, on 25th June of the same year.[1] He was the 6th child and 3rd son of Garden Duff 8th of Hatton, and Louisa (Dunbar) Duff.[2] He inherited the title from his father because the oldest son John died at the age of 29 from consumption, and the second son, Benjamin, was disinherited by his father due to dissatisfaction with his conduct.[3]
Garden married Douglas Isabella Maria Urquhart on 6 June 1850, in Turriff, Aberdeen.[4] The couple had seven children, including Sir Beauchamp Duff. Having been widowed in 1861, he married Jean Cook in Edinburgh on 14 October 1862.[5] Garden and Jean had three children together.[6]
According to Tayler and Tayler (1914) Garden died in 1866, having held the estate of Hatton for only eight years.[7] Other reports state that he died in 1886.[8] A death registration for Garden William Duff, aged 52, registered in Knaresborough (Harrogate) supports the 1866 date. [9]
