Biography

Patrick was born about 1863 in Carrowgarve, Roscommon Ireland. He was the son of Maurice Dufficy and Bridget Croghan.

Patrick was an assisted immigrant aboard the vessel " FLORIDA" (age 24) which departed from Plymouth to Sydney on 15th Oct, 1885 (arrived 6th Dec 1885) and settled at Surry Hills, NSW. Apparently, according to relatives in Ireland, he left home the same day as his brother Jeremiah & sister Sarah. Jeremiah & Sarah both settled in Townsville, Queensland however Patrick elected to settle in Surry Hills, NSW, Australia.

Surry Hills around the turn of the century was a very poor area with many Irish immigrants attempting to make their way in a new country. Many families struggled to make ends meet & Patrick would also find the times difficult. Due to the rampant poverty in the area, crime was also a major concern.

Patrick, a waiter in Sydney met and married Catherine Garvey, a Parlormaid originally from Brighton, Victoria in St Patrick's R.C. Church, Sydney on Jan 15, 1889 and whilst originally residing in 113 Devonshire St, Surry Hills, NSW, Australia they eventually relocated to 545 Bourke St, Surry Hills, NSW where they set up a Grocery Store (sometime between 1892-1899) and had seven children (1 son - Maurice & 6 daughters - Eileen, Veronica, Mary, Kathleen, Lucy & Philomena). Prior to setting up the grocer store Patrick was a waiter (1885 - sometime between1892 to 1899).

  • 1891-93 : 113 Devonshire St, Surry Hills, NSW, Australia
  • 1894-1919 : 545 Bourke St, Surry Hills, NSW, Australia

Patrick passed away in Surry Hills, NSW on Jan 4, 1919, age 59 and is buried in Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, Matraville, Randwick City, New South Wales, Australia : also known as Botany Cemetery.
