Biography

Lucy was born in 1857 on Rottnest Island, Western Australia.^[1] She is the daughter of Samuel Duffield and Eliza Backshall.

Last Friday morning news was received of a deplorable accident which had taken place at the Swan on the previous day. Miss Lucy Duffield, a daughter of the late Mr. S. Duffield, of Rottnest, had been for some time fulfilling the duties of assistant matron at the Swan Orphanage. On Thursday last she went down to the river to bathe, and, after some time had elapsed, and she did not return, one of the boys at the Orphanage was sent to look for her. Upon reaching the bathing place, he found her in the water dead; and it is conjectured that the immediate cause of her death was an epileptic fit, the deceased having, in her lifetime, been subject to seizures of that kind. Much sympathy is felt for her afflicted relatives and friends, and her loss will be severely felt by everyone connected with the Orphanage, as during her brief connection with that institution, she rendered most valuable services, and by her amiable disposition greatly endeared herself to its inmates.^[2]
