Genevieve was born Dec 8 1834. In a document which appears to be written and signed by Rev Father Belanger himself, he writes that she was 16 years 8 months and 20 days old when she was baptised at Immaculate Conception Church at Sandy Point on Aug 28 1851 and recognised as the legitimate daughter of John Dauphinee, recorded as John Duffney and Marie Anne LeJeune, recorded as Mary Young. The online record of Sandy Point baptisms has her recorded as Dec 8 1843,[1] which appears to be incorrectly transcribed.
She married George Haynes on 9 Dec, 1852 in St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Sandy Point, Newfoundland[2].
Together they had:
Source for children[3]
She died May 23, 1909 as Jane Hynes, a widow, of Gravels. Her funeral was May 25, 1909. She is found in the death records for St. Stephen's Anglican Church [4]
It is not certain that she was buried in Sandy Point as her headstone can be found in St. James Anglican Church Cemetery in Berry Head, Port au Port, Newfoundland[5]
Rhon White comments: I am a descendant of Jean Frederick and Marie Anne. I have had this paper for years and been researching family genealogy for over 25 years. I pulled this paper out of my notes today and for the first time actually read it. I don't know who would verify the signature and handwriting of Rev Father Belanger, however it appears to be true as he was very precise. The same day Jean Frederick aka John was baptised in the Catholic Church and his other children also baptised. For those searching for Genevieve's birth, I believe that Dec 8 1834 is correct. I will be scanning and attaching the copy of the transcribed journal entry soon if I can. If someone wants to certify that it is a true copy they can do so at their own expense.
There is no proof that the Duffney family was ever in St. Malo in the 1830s although some family trees may have her as such. More likely she would have been born either in Nova Scotia, maybe St. Ann's Bay, or born in Winterhouses, Newfoundland, where her family would have joined her father John (Jean Frederick)who was the first settler there.
Philip Albert born 1874 might be a son but it is not yet proven[6]
