Biography

Agnès was born about 1741. She was the daughter of Pierre Dugas and Elisabeth Bourg. [1]

She was listed on the 1752 La Roque census in Anse-à-Pinet, Isle Saint-Jean (now Prince Edward Island) as "Ainesse" age 11.[2]

"The Acadian's hope of living peacefully on Isle Saint-Jean was soon shattered. In the summer of 1758, the fortress of Louisbourg on Isle Royale was attacked by British troops. The French capitulated thereby forfeiting Isle Saint-Jean as well. Soldiers were sent to the Island with orders to deport the inhabitants to France. Some 3000 Islanders were successfully rounded up and crowded on ships that set sail for Europe later in the fall. For the Acadians, it was disaster.1500 of them managed to escape deportation by fleeing to the Bay of Chaleurs region and to Quebec where many died of sickness and hunger. Of those deported to France, more that half drowned or died by disease and illness during the voyage and many others died in the months following their arrival in France."[3]

The family did not escape deportation. They were among the 60 Acadians who were put aboard the ship Tamerlan and disembarked at Saint-Malo in Bretagne on January 16, 1759. [4] A child with the surname Haché, listed with the family, was born and died during the crossing to Europe. Her mother Elisabeth died one month after arrival in France.

She married Benoni Blanchard on 7 February 1764, in St. Suliac, Bretagne (now Ille-et-Vilaine department), France. [1]

She passed away on 20 August 1764 at the Hotel-Dieu hospital in Saint-Malo and was buried the same day. [1][5]
