Biography

PIERRE RICHARD is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 5 Right. Listed with him is his wife Marguerite Dugas and one child, Pierre Richard.[1]

Marguerite Dugas, daughter of Louis Dugas and Marie Josephe Girouard, was born about 1735 in Port Royal, Acadia.[2]

She married Pierre Richard c.1752 in Acadia.[2]

Their known children:

  1. Fabien
  2. Louis
  3. Pierre
  4. Marie Marguerite
  5. Olivier
  6. Philippe
  7. Francois

In 1763 they were counted on a list of Acadian prisoners at Halifax, due to be released by the ending of the Seven Years War.[3][4]

She immigrated to Louisiana from Halifax c.1764.

On 8 November 1774, she was counted with her husband and five children on the census in Opelousas, Spanish Louisiana.[5] She was again counted on a census on 4 May 1777 in Opelousas, Spanish Louisiana, this time with her husband and six children.[6]

She may have been the Marguerite Richard who died and was buried in August 1795 in Opelousas, Louisiana,[7][8] but it was unusual for women in that time and place to be recorded with their husbands' surnames. Stephen A. White cites her death in an email about Marguerite Dugas as before August 22, 1797.[2]

Fabien Richard, un autre fils de Marguerite était le parrain de Pierre Dugas, fils de Pierre Dugas et d’Anne Thibodeau (Rg St-Martinville 24 août 1777).
