Pauline Dugas was born in New Brunswick in 1939. She is of French Canadian descent.
Pauline was the first child in her mother's second marriage. Her mother had two older children by a previous marriage at the time of her birth. Her father was serving a jail term for theft at the time of her birth. Her mother was not able to care for her so she was placed in the care of an aunt & uncle who were childless.
Pauline attended a French country school where she completed grade 8, spending 2 years in grade 2. Following school she did domestic work as well as some hairdressing. She moved to the Oshawa area in 1957 and again in 1958.
She began dating her sons father *name unknown* in January 1958. She described him as being very immature, and a good humored happy go lucky man. However he was irresponsible with no worries whatsoever. She claimed he wouldn't settle nor would he keep a job but he enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, and holding a bottle of beer. She claimed to have no feeling for him whatsoever and his whereabouts were unknown at the time of their sons birth (Francis Bernard Dugas aka Louis Van Schagen) on December 4, 1958.
Pauline wanted to keep her son but she couldn't and knew he would have a better life than she could give him. Francis was placed in the care of the Children's Aid Society on December 18, 1958.
