WILLIAM SHERWIN and MARY DUGGAN William Sherwin was baptised at Ockbrook near Derby, 22 May 1763, the son of William and Mary Sherwin. He arrived in the colony as a corporal with his wife Ann aboard the convict transport "Pitt" in 1792. Also on board was Capt. Joseph Foveaux. Both were in the NSW Corps. In 1793, William Sherwin was promoted to Sergeant and his wife was seduced by Jos. Forveaux. William was then sent to Norfolk Island in March 1794, whilst his wife Ann lived with Forveaux and went with him to England, where they married in 1810. William returned to NSW in 1799 and purchased 200 acres in the Hawkesbury district and a 50 acre farm near Parramatta. William probably lived in Parramatta from 1799 where he was described as a Storekepper and lived in his house which backed onto the river, just east of the modern ferry wharf and close to the public storehouse. In 1814, he was living with Mary Duggan/Duggin and they had a family of 7 children. Mary was born c1783 and had arrived on the "Marquis Cornwallis" in 1796 with her sister Eleanor and parents Michael and Mary Duggan from Ireland. Her father Michael was also in the NSW Corps. In 1815 William was granted 400 acres fronting Prospect Creek, which he named "Ockbrook" after his native place. When he died on 27 March 1822 he was also Chief Constable at Parramatta. He is buried at St. Johns cemetery Parramatta. Nearby is his mother-in-law Mary Duggin who died and was buried on the same day. William and Mary's son William were sent to England, where he trained as a doctor and became the first Australian Doctor of Medicine (MD).
