Research notes

REGARDING SEPARATE PROFILES for: Jacques Gabriel Duhamel-38 and Jacques Duhamel-388

In November 2021 (after discussion in the France project), we have separated what may be two different people (although this remains uncertain):

(1) Jacques Duhamel who was the spouse of Anne Tranchard and the father of soldier and Nouvelle-France pioneer Thomas Duhamel dit Sansfaçon - which person is now Duhamel-388; and
(2) Jacques Gabriel Duhamel who was a military officer and the son of Jacques Duhamel and Barbe de Loynes - which person remains in this profile as Duhamel-38.

After review and discussion, there are two basic reasons that they are being separated into distinct profiles:

(1) The marriage record of Jacques Duhamel and Anne Tranchard has been located at Thiouville in Normandie (where she is from) - which does not include any reference to Jacques' parents or origin: https://www.archivesdepartementales76.net/ark:/50278/f9a725c70084d68f2a03db5fd370e71f/dao/0/123
(2) A published tree reflecting the «Généalogie de la Maison du Hamel» (by Mm. de Saint-Pons & Lainé, Paris 1834) - which does not indentify a spouse or family for Jacques Gabriel Duhamel: http://racineshistoire.free.fr/LGN/PDF/du_Hamel.pdf

While the prior equivalence of these two people is considered unproven, it should be noted that neither of these source documents actually establishes that they are different either. In particular, the marriage record at Thiouville is silent regarding the parents of Jacques - and the cited Généalogie de la Maison du Hamel is actually silent regarding whether Jacques Gabriel had a family.

With regard to that family history, it should also be noted that for many of the sons tracked in the history, including Jean Gabriel's older brother François, the history specifically states that they were «sans alliance» (without spouse), «sans posterité» (without children) or «postérité inconnue» (posterity unknown). But none of those entries are noted for Jacques Gabriel - suggesting that in his case it may not have been tracked or found.

The locations involved initially seemed remote as well - with the marriage of Jacques to Anne Tranchard at Thiouville in Normandie - and the portion of the du Hamel family to which Jacques Gabriel belonged being noted as the «branche de Champagne». However, further research suggests that the relevant locations are not in fact that far from each other.

In particular, Jacques Gabriel was noted in various documents (cited in the Research Notes), as being from Bourseville - which is not in Champagne - but rather in Picardie near the border of Normandie and not far from Dieppe. And Thiouville is in the Caux region of Normandie, about 50km from Dieppe.

Finally, it should be noted that the du Hamel family referred to was very connected with the French military - and Jacques Gabriel was himself a lieutenant of the galères which were generally associated with the French navy. The father of Thomas Duhamel dit Sansfaçon brought his family to Beuzemouchel - which was an historic «Chàteau Fort» - by 1671, when Thomas was baptized at the church there. [See notes regarding Beauzemouchel in profile of Jacques Duhamel.] And Thomas Duhamel served with the Troupes de la Marine and was sent to Nouvelle-France in that capacity.

In sum, it remains possible that Jacques Gabriel (Duhamel-38) and Jacques (Duhamel-388) do represent the same person - but it has not been confirmed to date. Accordingly, they are being set up with individual profiles reflecting what is known about each - and if further research confirms that they are the same person or the families are indeed connected, then these profiles can be merged or reconnected as appropriate.

If anyone finds any new information regarding the potential connections of Jacques Duhamel-388 and Jacques Gabriel Duhamel-38 - or other members of the historic Famille du Hamel, please let me know!

--- NOTE REGARDING REVISED PROFILES: Jacques Gabriel Duhamel (Duhamel-38) and Jacques Duhamel (Duhamel-388) ---

I adopted these and related profiles to help disentangle and reconstruct what are likely (although not certain) to be two different people and families:

(1) Jacques Duhamel who was the spouse of Marie Anne Tranchard (Tranchard-1) and the father of soldier and Nouvelle-France pioneer Thomas Duhamel dit Sansfaçon (Duhamel-40) - which person is now Duhamel-388; and

(2) Jacques Gabriel Duhamel who was a military officer and the son of Jacques Duhamel (Duhamel-55) and Barbe de Loynes (De_Loynes-1) - which person remains in this profile as Duhamel-38.

After review and discussion, there are two basic reasons that they are being separated into distinct profiles:

Parents are correct, wife and children are not. I believe this Jacques-Gabriel du Hamel died unmarried.

See PRDH for the Jacques Duhanel Sansfscon who married Marie Anne Tranchant 31 December 1665: https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000179469361857

Found a source, parents restored. Thanks for your patience.
There is a source for Barbe de Loynes and Jacques Duhamel's marriage

EDIT - they were married in 1634.

I removed the connection because it had been added back by someone who did not provide sources and made other errors. However, I believe the connection might be (probably is) correct. Will research more and reconnect if connection is supported.
