Michael was born about 1490, probably in Otterton, Devonshire, to a cadet branch of the prominent Duke family.[1][2]
Michael Duke leased Lake House near Amesbury, in the 1550’s, as part of the same chantry grants that profited Richard Duke of Devonshire and his friends so well. Alice Duke, probably his mother, is also listed, having leased “diverse arable lands of the lord’s demesne.” Alice paid £3 13s. Michael paid the sum of “6s 8d p.a. for a good fat swan at the Feast of St. Lucy the Virgin, £3 6s 8d.” [3] Michael Duke had two sons (John and Thomas) and three daughters: Jane married Bithan; Agnes married (1559) Edward Chevers; and Alice married Robert Scutt.
