Biography

Well Known Man Passes After Having Been Ill For Two Weeks. Enoch Leonard DUKE, well known Phenix City citizen, died Sunday morning at 9:30 o’clock at the city hospital, after an illness of two weeks. // Mr. DUKE was born on August 5, 1877, in Georgia, and was married to Miss Leila DECKER, who survives him, on December 22, 1901. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Phenix City, where they lived until the time of his death. While a young man he entered the employ of Golden’s Foundry and Machine Company, where he learned the machinist’s trade, later going to the Columbus Iron Works and then to the Perkins Hosiery mills, where he remained for twenty years as master mechanic. A few years ago he became associated with the United States Rubber company at their Hogansville plant, where he was employed when he contracted the illness that caused his death. Mr. Duke was prominently associated with the civic and religious interests of Phenix City, having served as a deacon of the First Baptist church and for a number of years as the choir director of the church. Surviving him besides his wife, Mrs. Leila J. Duke, are five sons, Clarence E. DUKE, of West Point, Ga., Harry L. DUKE, of Columbus, Leland M. DUKE, Arch B. DUKE and John F. DUKE, of Phenix City, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at the First Baptist church of Phenix City. Rev. C. N. JAMES, pastor, will conduct the services, assisted by Dr. Robert S. BOYD, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Columbus, and the interment will be at Pine Grove cemetery. The following will serve as pall-bearers: L. L. RAINES, L. BOOKER, C. H. RANDALL, Charles TOLBERT, Alex GRAHAM and T. J. CRAWFORD.” [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Monday, 12 FEB 1934, p. 7.] Bio by: Laurence Hotard
